She Can Do Anything

Last week on Facebook you may have seen the fabulous story we posted about the 17-year-old SheHero, Angela Zhang, who created a Nanoparticle that kills cancer. That’s right, kills cancer. Zhang’s project “Design of Image-guided, Photo-thermal Controlled Drug Releasing Multifunctional Nanosystem for the Treatment of Cancer Stem Cells” will not only save countless lives but won her $100,000 dollars in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology.

Zhang has been working on developing this particle since 2009 (when she was around 15) and wants to continue to study chemical engineering, biomedial engineering, or physics. Someday she hopes to be a research professor.

I really wanted to take a moment and point out why stories like Zhang's are so absolutely vital to share. Aside from the obvious fact that all of us are affected by cancer at some point, which means that, all of us have a stake in Zhang’s amazing development.

I mean the fact that when our young SheHeroes and Heroes turn on the TV they do not see 17-year-old girls curing cancer. They see girls chasing boys and getting pregnant on MTV.

The best weapon we have as parents to counterbalance what our girls are exposed to on TV, in the media, and at school,  is by showing them the very real and amazing things being done by very real and amazing girls are all over the world. Girls like Angela Zhang.

And women like the women we showcase on SheHeroes in our video section.

So when your surfing the web and you come across these stories, or happen to see us sharing them on Facebook, bookmark them and share them with the SheHero in her life.

Make sure she knows that SHE can accomplish amazing things too, all she has to do is put her mind to it.
